Browns Creek Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 190th anniversary yesterday. Founded in 1835 by Samuel Brown, it is one of Haywood County’s oldest churches and one of the oldest black churches in Tennessee. In 1865, after the Civil War, the church property was ceded to the newly freed black congregation.
